Message from Business Manager Buddy Thoman;
The evidentiary hearings for Energy Strong came to a close on Friday, March 7th. The parties have to submit initial briefs by April 4th and reply briefs are due April 25th. After that, the presiding Commissioner will have 30 days to submit his written recommendation to the entire BPU Board of Commissioners. Settlement discussions continue to take place and hopefully, one can be reached without the Commissioner having to submit a ruling. As discussed prior, all settlement discussions including the topics, are ruled confidential.
On Friday, March 14th we completed two days of hearings on the 69kv arbitration case for the Service Dispatchers. Closing briefs are due in 30 days, after which we will have an Executive season. At the conclusion of the Executive season, the impartial arbitrator will have 30 days to give her decision.
Monday, March 10th started the Food Drive that our NxtUp94 committee is running for the food pantry next to our Union Hall called Rise House. All PSEG locations will have collection bins for our members to contribute food to those less fortunate. Please consider donating to this cause. On April 28th, our Local will be donating all the food that was collected to the Rise House. Thank you in advance for anything you can donate. More information on the Food Drive is below.
Many of you may know we had a serious gas explosion in Ewing last week in which 1 person was killed. The gas explosion has made headlines and 6 employees went to the hospital. Two were admitted, one having to undergo surgery for compound fractures of his legs. IBEW 94 had one member present at the scene. Fortunately, he only sustained cuts and bruises and didn't have to go to the hospital. The other employees that were injured were from Local 855 of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. We wish them all a speedy recovery. The BPU is scheduling an investigation into the cause of the accident, as well as the State and Local Police. The PSEG employees were responding to notification of a Gas leak. The work being performed at the site, were contractors. As the investigation continues we would ask that you keep the deceased and injured in your prayers.
I was asked to Chair a committee for the NJ State AFL-CIO, on the start up of a Statewide Youth Caucus. Our committee has just submitted our recommendations to the AFL-CIO Executive Board, which were adopted. We will be meeting with National AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer, Liz Shuler, to discuss additional options for the formation of this Caucus. As we progress, i will keep all of you up to date.
